FrontPanel 6

FrontPanel 6 provides a plug-and-play USB interface, a unified SDK for firmware and host code, and a browser-based platform for app development. We handle the integration so you can go from design to a browser-ready, hardware-connected FPGA application in record time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a development board and an integration module?

A development board is complete on its own: power, clocking, DDR4, the USB host link and SYZYGY ports for plug-in peripherals, ready to use on a bench. An integration module carries the FPGA, DDR4, flash, clocks, power regulation and USB on a small board with mezzanine connectors underneath, and mounts on a carrier board you design for your product.

Should I develop on the SYZYGY Hub or the XEM8320?

The SYZYGY Hub ($499.95) is the entry point, with an XCAU10P, three SYZYGY Standard ports and a 10 Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 host link. The XEM8320 ($1,499.95) has roughly three times the logic and DSP, six SYZYGY ports including two TXR4 transceiver ports, and the same XCAU25P-2 FPGA as the XEM8310, so it suits a product headed for the XEM8310.

Can a design move from the XEM8320 to the XEM8310?

Yes. Both carry the XCAU25P-2FFVB676E, so the logic, DSP, block RAM and transceiver counts match. The changes are the pin constraints, the XEM8310's 2 GiB, 32-bit DDR4 interface, and moving the circuitry that was on SYZYGY peripherals to your carrier board.

How does an integration module connect to my carrier board?

Through Samtec mezzanine connectors on the module's underside. The XEM8310 uses two 80-pin BSE high-density connectors and one 80-pin QSH high-speed connector, with mating carrier connectors in stack heights from 5 to 25 mm. The XEM8305 uses Samtec ERF6 connectors, one 100-pin and two 80-pin, at a 5 mm stack height. Part numbers and pinouts are on the XEM8310 and XEM8305 expansion connector pages.

Can I work with the XEM8310 or XEM8305 before my carrier board exists?

Yes. The BRK8310 ($149.95) and BRK8305 ($199.95) breakout boards mate with the modules and bring their connectors out. Each has a PCI Express reference design, and its design files are a starting point for your own carrier.

Who supplies the I/O bank voltages?

The XEM8310 generates three I/O voltages on board, which you set in FrontPanel, and provides them to the carrier. On the XEM8305, the carrier supplies DC input and the VCCO rail for each I/O bank. On the SYZYGY Hub and the XEM8320, SmartVIO sets each port's voltage from the attached peripheral.

Which boards have transceivers and PCI Express?

The XEM8320 and XEM8310 have 12 GTY transceivers at up to 16.375 Gb/s, and the XEM8305 has 12 GTH transceivers. The XEM8310 supports PCIe Gen 3 and the XEM8305 is PCIe Gen 4 capable on the -2 speed grade, with PCIe offered through their breakout boards. The SYZYGY Hub does not bring out transceivers.

Do all four boards work with FrontPanel?

Yes. Every board ships with FrontPanel: firmware for the USB link, HDL modules for your design, the FrontPanel API for C++, Python, C# and Java, and the FrontPanel Platform for browser-based apps. The SYZYGY Hub uses the FrontPanel AXI data port, and the three XEM boards use Classic endpoints over USB 3.0.

Is volume pricing available?

Step pricing is available on all four boards. Email sales@opalkelly.com for a volume quote.
